Accessibility is not an afterthought

A11y (accessibility) must be a carefully designed step in the software engineering lifecycle, not an afterthought.

I attended my first A11yNYC meetup last night, and it was an eye-opener about the different stages companies can be in regarding their a11y adoption.

During my last iOS developer role at Google, I was lucky enough to be part of an organization with really strong a11y best practices and processes:

• QA always verifies new changes to be a11y compliant
• No new feature can be released unless it receives an a11y stamp

Is a11y a first citizen in your products?
