Building at scale: let the users tell you

One of the biggest lessons I took from my time at Google is that when you build at scale, you don’t have to guess what users want; you can simply let the users tell you.

Any change, no matter how small, is shipped behind a feature flag that is part of an experiment. In practice, it’s just an if/else.

Code snippet: if experiment_feature_flag == True: new_experience() else: old_experience()

This gives teams complete control over who sees the new experience. You start with a small percentage of users, measure everything (engagement, behavior shifts, revenue), and let the data speak.

Only if the new experience consistently outperforms the old one does it go fully live.

It’s a powerful reminder: intuition is good, but data wins.
