On the phone

Tap points on the map and the route snaps to the streets, with the distance updating as you go. Undo and redo are there for when you overshoot. A GPX file from a race organiser can be opened with FitCrumbs directly and gets imported, elevation included.

On the watch

The route arrives as a dotted line on a dark map, ready to start.

During the workout the watch records a proper HealthKit workout session and shows elapsed time, distance, pace and heart rate under the map. The path you actually took is drawn on top of the plan.

Under the hood

  • iPhone and watch apps in SwiftUI. MapKit for drawing and routing, WatchConnectivity to hand the route over to the watch, HealthKit for the workout session and heart rate.
  • A small server in TypeScript on Express. It does the Strava OAuth exchange and token refresh, pushes the GPX upload to Strava, and computes total elevation for imported routes, so the Strava secret never lives in the app.
  • The server runs as a Docker container on my own Kubernetes cluster.

Started in November 2023, on the App Store since December 2023. GPX import and elevation came with 1.3 in March 2024.
